2015 Bassin’ Magazine Big Bass World Championship recap
BIXBY, OK – Nov. 3, 2015 - The Bassin’ Magazine Big Bass World Championship (BBWC) is in the books as 46 anglers from across the nation paired up for a day on the water at Ft. Gibson Lake located in Oklahoma.
Forty-four BBWC State Champions, 2014 Big Bass World Champion Anthony Sege and www.bassresource.com 2nd chance winner Chris King from New York arrived Friday evening for dinner and pre-tournament activities.
BassResource.com 2nd chance winner drawing is randomly selected from a special post on the BassResource.com forum board, giving anglers one more chance and way to win.
State Champion anglers were paired, had a short question and answer session with tournament director and BASSIN’ Magazine owner Brad Uhl and over $500 in fishing prizes for each state champion were handed out.
“BASSIN’ is proud to be a title sponsor for this event, every year it means so much to these anglers, who at home, may not have the time to compete on a tournament level,” Uhl said. “This gives them something more than prizes, it is a true life changing experience.”
Prizes included original buffwear from BUFF, motor sticks and steer stops from TH MARINE, hardbaits from DUEL and YO-ZURI, and chatterbaits from Z-MAN, swimbaits from HUDDLESTON and DREAMSMASHER, trophy’s from www.basstrophiesonline.com and many other prizes, all wrapped in a nice weigh in bag from YUM BAITS.
The event started at safe light, and the forecast was heavy rain and thunderstorms. Anglers were prepared with rain gear, but the Oklahoma weather proved unpredictable. The anglers fished in 65-degree temperatures and heavy drizzle at times.
The overcast clouds did not worry the anglers as the launch at 7:30 am went off smoothly. Weigh-in was scheduled at 2:30 p.m. on the Integrated Tournament Solutions weigh-in stage, which carries top of the line equipment. www.qflseries.com
“These guys come across this stage and they will feel like they are on top of the world,” Joe Davis, with Integrated Tournament Solutions, said. “The added hot seat for the current leader makes it that much cooler.” This hot seat for the current leader was a first for the BBWC anglers.
Also on display was the BASSIN’ Magazine official vehicle, and Fred Roumbanis Ima Lures wrapped truck. Roumbanis was the event’s special honoree boat marshal and featured his fully rigged Legend bass boat as a extra prize for the anglers. These two vehicles enclosed the Alumacraft Prowler 165 boat, for the World Champion, on display courtesy of Larry Smith Marine, in Coweta, OK.
The 2015 Big Bass World Championship prize was again up to $50,000 and a new Alumacraft Prowler 165 boat, motor, and trailer. Since 1946 Alumacraft boats have been producing high quality boats by fishermen, for fishermen, at an affordable cost. Alumacraft continues to lead the industry in solidly, well-crafted aluminum fishing boats.
“Alumacraft is proud to partner with the BBWC, and we look forward to continuing our partnership into the future,” Kent Thostenson, Alumacraft marketing director, said. “The BBWC is a great match and fit for the weekend anglers fishing their style of tournament, and the quality of boat Alumacraft produces.”
As the weigh-in began it was evident many anglers caught bass. They were coming up to the aerated trough with large fish.
After several lead changes on the hot seat, only two anglers remained. Both brought in two huge fish each. Aaron Roberts of Oregon weighed in and his huge 5.25-pound bass took the lead with only Wayne Campbell from Maryland left to put his fish on the scales. Campbell reached in the sack and pulled out one monster fish, hitting the scales at 5.24.
Roberts knew he was still on top, but Campbell had one more fish in his bag. It hit the scales and weighed 6.16 pounds. This fish gave him the win, Big Bass World Championship trophy, the check and the Alumacraft boat.
“When Brad put her on the scale and it settled at 6.16, almost a full pound over 2nd place, it was such an amazing feeling, hearing your named called as the winner. This is something I will never forget,” Campbell said.
The top five finishers in the 2015 BBWC include:
1st place - Wayne Campbell (MD) 6.16 pounds
2nd Place - Aaron Roberts (OR) 5.24 pounds
3rd Place - Ron Casner (AZ) 4.93 pounds
